White Rose Coffee Roasters are an award winning, independent, family run business based in the centre of Halifax. Running for 5 years and going from strength to strength, it is part of the original family business, Pennine Tea & Coffee Ltd, which has been expertly serving the hospitality trade for over 30 years.
We import and roast high quality coffee beans from an impressive 22 locations around the world as we are passionate about sharing the amazing array of flavours coffee has to offer. Beans are roasted daily in small batches, with love and care, to ensure a consistent and high-quality finished product for our customers to enjoy.
We sell online to individuals as one-off purchases, via our subscription service and supply wholesale to local cafes, bars, and restaurants including offering own label blends designed with them.
We are also committed to sustainable growth, both in terms of transparent trade with coffee producing farmers and the wider coffee industry and with our packaging and deliveries. We are an ambitious company with plans to grow both our retail and wholesale business and need a new Roasting Assistant to help deliver these plans and grow with us.

The Role
Roasting
Supported by Head Roaster, Robert, you will operate a 5kg bacth roasting machine daily to produce small batches of roasted coffee beans that are then processed and bagged on site by the warehouse assistant. Coffee roasting has some technical elements such as using the equipment accurately, weighing, monitoring time and temperature but it also requires softer skills and attention to detail such as visual checks to ensure you are getting the best from the roasting process.
Learning to roast coffee by watching the existing coffee roaster operating the equipment, learning the controls and correct safe operation.
Gaining knowledge about coffee and process, roasting skills, cupping etc through reading books provided and accessing online resources in work time.
Stock Control
Liase with other staff to work out stock needed to complete orders, advise on available stock if there is an urgent order.
Planning
Preparing daily a roast schedule by assessing existing roasted coffee stocks, working out what would need roasting for the day and preparing 5kg buckets of green coffee to be roasted.
Quality Control
Arranging cupping of roasted coffee to assess if the roasts have achieved expected flavour profiles.
Customer Service
Greeting customers collecting in person, preparing their orders, and taking payment as required.
Barista training in house (as required)
Experience Required
We are looking for someone who wants a career in the coffee industry and has ambitions to develop and grow with us as the business grows.
- A coffee drinker
- Proof of right to work in UK
- Competent in numeracy and literacy
- ICT literate – competent in MS Excel, Word, Outlook etc.
- Willingness to get stuck in and quick to learn
- To be aware that this can be a physical role – stooping, lifting, carrying boxes and sacks
- Patience with close attention to detail; understanding of the importance of time management
- Ability to work efficiently, diligently and cheerfully as part of a small team
- Excellent at multitasking, prioritisation and organising own workload
- Previous experience in the coffee industry would be an advantage
- A desire to learn and expand speciality coffee knowledge
- Be extremely reliable and punctual
- Be flexible regarding the work required for the needs of the business

Wage: National Living Wage with potential to increase as you develop
