Ngila Coffee Estate is situated in the Karatu District on the slopes of the Ngorongoro crater and surrounded by the Ngila Forest reserve. It was started
in the 20th century by a German family and later taken by British farmers after the 2nd world war, who in 1990 sold it to a German Family, Ruldolf Meyer. Since then the coffee area has expanded, irrigation technology and new processing equipment installed. Since more than 10 years Ngila coffee has found recognition as one of the finest washed Arabica coffees from Ngorongoro crater. The water of the Endoro stream, coming from Ngorongoro National Park is enhancing Ngila ́s finest coffee.

Too Sensitive and Unstable

I had high hopes for these Tanzanian Arabica beans, but the espresso extraction was surprisingly inconsistent. I tested multiple grind settings on my Niche Zero, but the flow rate remained erratic, sometimes too fast, sometimes choking the shot entirely.

These beans seem extremely sensitive to grind size and extraction conditions. Even tiny adjustments made a noticeable difference, yet the flow still lacked stability. Based on my experience, this could be due to uneven roasting or internal bean density inconsistencies, both of which are known to disrupt proper water flow through the puck.

While the flavor profile showed some potential, the technical challenges made it hard to dial in a reliable shot. I wouldn’t recommend these beans for espresso unless you’re prepared for a lot of trial and error.

Disappointing

I had high hopes for this coffee, but unfortunately, it was quite disappointing. The aroma was weak, and the taste didn’t deliver the rich, fruity notes I expected from a quality Arabica. The body was thin, lacking the smoothness or complexity you’d hope for in East African beans.

I’ve tried several other coffee beans from White Rose Coffee and found most of them excellent, but this one, I wouldn’t recommend.

Underwhelmed

I got this through my lucky dip monthly subscription and have been a bit disappointed. When I ground the beans in my coffee machine (DeLonghi La Specialista Arte) using my usual setting, the resulting coffee was too fine and blocked the filter. Only by setting the grinder to the coursest setting was I able to produce anything usable. And even then, the resulting coffee tasted a bit weak.

In contrast, my previous delivery - the Ethiopian Yirgacheffe Arabica - was fantastic

Our favourite

We were looking for a Tanzanian coffee after going on honeymoon there, this is even from one of the areas we visited. In our opinion and taste, this coffee is excellent and we will buy it again
